Ninth Grade Literacy Core Learning Goals

  • Read a variety of texts in genres including: short story, novel, novella, satire, epic, dramatic monologue, and drama
  • Develop cultural literacy skills such as recognizing authors, their works, and their significance
  • Comprehend selections using a variety of strategies including: predicting, summarizing, paraphrasing, making inferences, making judgments, drawing conclusions, identifying cause and effect, citing evidence to support ideas and opinions, extending ideas found in text, and comparing and contrasting points
  • Analyze and evaluate text organization, content, author’s purpose, and author’s effectiveness
  • Develop literature response skills, both written and oral, to express critical judgments
  • Expand working vocabulary through reading and word study including analogies, contextual clues, antonyms, and synonyms
  • Consider and assess literary elements, such as character development, plot structure, conflict, theme, imagery, point of view, symbolism, tone, style, mood, flashback, and foreshadowing
  • Use the writing process to compose narrative, informational, and persuasive pieces and to address the five domains of writing (focus, content, organization, style, and conventions) with an emphasis on informational pieces
  • Support the thesis using text specific substantiation when applicable
  • Apply appropriate mechanics, usage, and grammar to writing
  • Study parts of speech and parts of the sentence
  • Demonstrate appropriate speaking and listening skills in a variety of situations
  • Develop effective note-taking techniques from written materials and oral presentations
  • Determine appropriate media for research and learning
  • Employ print, non-print, and online resources to gather, organize, create, and present research
  • Distinguish between primary and secondary resources
  • Use appropriate citation and documentation of sources to demonstrate academic honesty and integrity and to avoid plagiarism
