Sixth Grade Literacy Core Learning Goals

  • Identify and read from a variety of genres, both fiction and nonfiction
  • Comprehend selections using a variety of strategies including summarizing, inferencing, making judgments, cause and effect, citing evidence to support ideas and opinions, extending ideas found in text and comparing and contrasting
  • Determine, analyze and evaluate text organization, author’s purpose and author’s effectiveness
  • Identify, analyze and compare literary elements such as antagonist, protagonist, setting, conflict, rising action, climax, resolution and theme
  • Identify imagery, point of view, symbolism, tone, style, mood, flashback and foreshadowing
  • Identify, apply and analyze the effectiveness of sound techniques (rhyme, meter, alliteration, etc.) and figurative language (personification, simile, metaphor, etc.)
  • Develop, expand and practice spelling skills, vocabulary and word relationships
  • Use the writing process to write narrative, informational and persuasive pieces using the five domains of writing (focus, content, organization, style and conventions)
  • Study and apply appropriate mechanics, usage and grammar
  • Demonstrate effective speaking and listening skills during reporting, information sharing, role playing, and question/answer sessions
  • Adapt spoken language (word choice, sentence structure, usage) to the audience, purpose, and occasion
  • Use rate, volume, pitch, tone, and body language effectively in spoken messages
  • Select and analyze the effectiveness of appropriate media for research, learning and presentations
  • Use a variety of print, non-print and online resources to gather, organize, create and present research for a variety of purposes
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the process used and product created in presentations, writings and literature by self and others
  • Use appropriate citation and documentation of sources to avoid plagiarism
