First Grade Core Learning Goals

First grade students engage in problem solving, communication, reasoning, connecting and representing as they:

  • Read, write, and sequence numbers to 100
  • Given a quantity shown in tens and ones, tell how many tens and ones there are and write the number
  • Count quantities up to 50
  • Know the combinations of 10
  • Find combinations of numbers up to 20
  • Develop language to describe and compare numbers (i.e., greater than, less than or equal to)
  • Use fraction names (half, quarter) to describe part and whole relationships
  • Use the calculator as a mathematical tool
  • Develop strategies for solving adding and subtracting story problem
  • Develop language to describe and compare weights, capacities, length and temperature
  • Recognize penny, nickel, dime, quarter and state value of each
  • Tell time at the hour and half-hour
  • Weigh with a balance
  • Represent measurements using numbers, concrete materials and pictures
  • Recognize concepts of the calendar using appropriate vocabulary (days of the week, months of the year, seasons)
  • Identify, compare, describe, and represent 2-D and 3-D shapes and objects (parallelogram, square, trapezoid, hexagon, cylinder, cone, cube, sphere rectangular prism)
  • Group shapes according to common attributes
  • Solve simple problems that involve spatial visualization
  • Collect, sort, and categorize data
  • Display data using tallies and line plots
  • Create a representation for a set of data that clearly communicates what a survey is about
  • Sort and classify objects by two attributes
  • Make, describe, and extend repeating patterns
