Kindergarten Core Learning Goals

Kindergarten students engage in problem solving, communication, reasoning, connecting and representing as they:

  • Count a set of up to 30 objects
  • Read, write and recognize numerals, number names and order relationships and connect them to the quantities they represent (0-10)
  • Find the total of two sets
  • Develop strategies for solving adding and subtracting story problems
  • Develop and use language to describe and compare lengths (longer than, shorter than, same as, heavier, empty, full, hotter, colder)
  • Sequence events in their daily routine: before, after, bedtime, story time, today, tomorrow
  • Use a non-standard unit to quantify length
  • Identify penny, nickel and dime
  • Develop vocabulary to name and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes and their attributes (triangles, rectangles, circles, spheres, cubes)
  • Relate 2-D and 3-D shapes to real world objects
  • Model and use directional and positional vocabulary (near to, over, under, between, inside, outside, beside)
  • Complete simple spatial visualization tasks and puzzles
  • Collect, organize and record data in a variety of ways (concrete materials, pictures, words, or numbers)
  • Identify outcomes that will happen, won’t happen and might happen
  • Solve mathematical problems based on data and simple comparisons (more, less, the same)
  • Find different ways to sort and classify a group of objects by attributes
  • Copy, construct, and extend patterns, such as a-b, a-a-b-b, a-a-b
